Providers and staff that work directly with youth, especially teens, have been asking for strategies, resources and tools to use. They know the theory – they need things they can apply to practice today. In collaboration with DHS in FY2013, we heard this need again from the live training – Engaging Youth in their Transition to Adulthood.
So the Child Welfare Training Academy developed this blended track of opportunities to learn more on engaging youth. This track includes a webinar, online course and resources to be used directly with youth.
Use the bolded links below to access the various areas of our Youth Engagement Track.
Working Together: A Youth’s Perspective – a live webinar recording
The best way to know what works with youth – is to hear from youth! This webinar is a collaborative effort and includes two young adults that have aged out of foster care; they share their ideas and insights as to what works. Included is an overview of Iowa Aftercare Services Network and the impact it has on participants; along with ideas and strategies to introduce Aftercare to youth so that they will take advantage of the program as they transition to adulthood. Finally we share tools and websites to gain more information.

It is important to remember that each young person is an individual with different needs, at different developmental stages and have different ways to process their life events. Each individual needs strategies that offer services, opportunities and supports for them to be successful. An important aspect of this course is that practical application is included with suggestions on how to incorporate it into daily work when engaging youth.
